چکیده

BACKGROUND Plants that are used as traditional medicine represent a relevant pool for selecting plant candidates that may have anticancer properties. In this study, the ethnomedicinal approach was used to select several medicinal plants native to Nigeria, on the basis of their local or traditional uses. The collected plants were then evaluated for cytoxicity. METHODS The antitumor activity of methanolic extracts obtained from 24 of the selected plants, were evaluated in vitro on five human cancer cell lines. RESULTS Results obtained from the plants screened indicate that 18 plant extracts of folk medicine exhibited promising cytotoxic activity against human carcinoma cell lines. Erythrophleum suaveolens (Guill. & Perr.) Brenan was found to demonstrate potent anti-cancer activity in this study exhibiting IC(50) = 0.2-1.3 μg/ml. CONCLUSIONS Based on the significantly potent activity of some plants extracts reported here, further studies aimed at mechanism elucidation and bio-guided isolation of active anticancer compounds is currently underway.

Screening of some Nigerian medicinal plants for antibacterial activity.

Crude extracts from eight Nigerian medicinal plants, used traditionally in the treatment of infectious and septic diseases in both humans and animals were screened in vitro for antibacterial activity, using the hole-plate diffusion method. Most of the extracts were active against gram-positive bacteria. Two of the plant, Angeiossus schimperi and Anacardium occidentale, had good antibacterial ac...

Molecular Modeling of Potential Anticancer Agents from African Medicinal Plants

Naturally occurring anticancer compounds represent about half of the chemotherapeutic drugs which have been put in the market against cancer until date. Computer-based or in silico virtual screening methods are often used in lead/hit discovery protocols. In this study, the "drug-likeness" of ~400 compounds from African medicinal plants that have shown in vitro and/or in vivo anticancer, cytotox...

In vitro and in vivo Methods for Anticancer Activity Evaluation and Some Indian Medicinal Plants Possessing Anticancer Properties: An Overview

Cancer is a major public health burden in both developed and developing countries. Anticancer activity is the effect of natural and synthetic or biological and chemical agents to reverse, suppress or prevent carcinogenic progression. Several synthetic agents are used to cure the disease but they have their toxicity and hence the research is going on to investigate the plant derived chemotherape...

Preliminary phytochemical screening and antimicrobial evaluation of three medicinal plants used in Nigeria.

Methanol extract of three Nigerian medicinal plants were screened for antimicrobial activity using modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion and agar dilution techniques to determine the diameters of zone of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the extracts respectively. The extract of each of the plants were tested against five clinical bacterial isolates comprising of two Gram-...

2-(4-Fluorophenyl)-N-phenylacetamide Derivatives as Anticancer Agents: Synthesis and In-vitro Cytotoxicity Evaluation

Cancer is a major global problem and is the second leading cause of mortality in the developed countries.Resistance to current chemotherapeutics and high incidence of adverse effects are the two principal reasons for developing new anticancer agents. Phenylacetamide derivatives can act as potential anticancer agents. Synthesis and screening of 2-(4-Fluorophenyl)-N-phenylacetamide derivatives in...
